Programmatically link help text with input

Description

Location: 07 Wiki - Edit

Severity: 7

Description: The hint for the Summary edit field comes after the field in the DOM. The instruction is not associated with the field. Screen reader users may not read the hint before they enter the information in the Summary field.

Pattern: None

Auditor Note: Developers should add aria-describedby and reference the hint to ensure that it is rendered when screen reader users tab on the Summary edit field.
Compliant Example:

<div class="controls">
<input aria-describedby="hint_id_summary" id="id_summary" name="summary" type="text">
<p id="hint_id_summary" class="help-block">Give a short reason for your edit, which will be stated in the revision log.</p>
</div>

Internal Note: Agree with the suggested fix. There has also been an informal discussion about deprecating Wiki altogether.

Dev notes:

  • link the id of the 'p' element to the textarea using aria-describedby

  • hint_id_summary does the same thing
