Gradebook Should Always Allow Initial Grade Entry
The grade book currently prevents instructors from entering grades for Staff Graded Point (SGP) assignments directly into the grade book. Let's say I want to assign 8 points (out of 10) for an SGP assignment; I should be able to go into the grade book directly and enter 8 points for a particular learner. The result should be 8/10... but we are finding that this will display as 8/0 instead.
The required process we've just learned is that you must use the CSV download/edit/upload process BEFORE you can enter/override grades in the gradebook. I can not emphasize this enough: Instructors want to enter grades directly into the grade book without jumping through our hoops!

Side note: The result of this work will help us to remove a caveat in the updated TA Guide about “initial grade entry” when managing grades.
FYI this has come up with UT Austin CS as well. They use staff-graded ORAs to track grades for projects that are done in Canvas. At the end of the semester, they try to upload the grades back into edX (so students can get their edX certificates). They would like to do this in Bulk Management (as it seems more intuitive and they basically download the gradebook from Canvas and want to upload to edX), but because there was never an “attempt” in the staff-graded ORA, the bulk upload doesn’t take, even if the gradebook says that it was successful (see image). They would prefer to use Bulk Management so they can upload all 5 assignments at once and not have to open up each individual ORA and create a unique CSV per assignment.
