Allow Assignment Names to be Edited in Gradebook

Description

Instructors are finding it difficult (and time consuming) to figure out what the gradebook means by "Homework 01" "Homework 02" etc. This is complicated by the fact that many courses will skip a week here or there, which results in "Homework ##" not being a good default naming convention. For example, Homework 03 might actually happen in week 4.

Also, some assignments are less frequent: Report 01 could be in week 2, while Report 02 could be in week 5. These arbitrary numbers are not good representatives of where/when assignments take place in a course, if that was there originally intended purpose. (not sure)

Lastly, instructors end up clicking into a learner's grade (to view a modal window) in order to see what assignments are actually called. "Lab 01" might be "Lab: Build a wordpress site" and Lab 02 is "Lab: Integrate an ecommerce plugin". Unfortunately, we do not have a standardized way to add an assignment name anywhere...

The names for assignments are not stored in a consistent spot (subsection name, unit name, component name?), which we should work on soon. Until we allow educators to name their assignments (like our competitors do), could we at least allow them to rename the arbitrary "Assignment ##" naming convention in Gradebook? Can we also allow those overrides to display in the progress page, too?

Thanks - happy to elaborate, as needed.

I was unable add you as a watcher (your name didn’t show up when I typed it) but commenting seems to be ok… weird. Could you check with IT if you are still unable to watch?

I created another ticket today regarding missing “assignment” names in modal windows.

it looks like we have an open ticket for renaming assignments already created. FYI, following up from the UT Austin Nutrition grading interview.

Additional note: the Progress page does show the subsection title that matches the given assignment when you hover over the progress bar, so there’s definitely a way of matching assignment # to subsection.

Having instructor-overrideable assignment names would require creating additional tables, however.
