In some cases, students see 500 error when entering courseware

Description

I'm not sure what the cause is, or how to reproduce it, but there are cases where students hit a 500 error when trying to access the courseware.

There workaround is to have the student go directly somewhere else in the course. In the past, we've had errors where a student has last accessed a section that is then deleted, but that doesn't seem to trigger this phenomenon. Yet the workaround was the same in that case, too.
