Key Discussion Points:
Presentation by @annabel.cellini
Annabel presented an in-depth market analysis focusing on Open edX’s positioning in North America and global markets.
The presentation covered:
Market Trends: Growth in microcredentials, competency-based learning, and hybrid learning models.
Focus on Workforce Education: Rising demand for upskilling and reskilling, particularly in corporate and government sectors.
Global Perspective: Highlighted initiatives like Skill India Digital Hub and FutureX as models for scaling Open edX globally.
Competitive Landscape: Analysis of major LMS platforms (e.g., Canvas, Moodle) and their market shares across the US and Europe.
Strategic Focus Areas:
Two main areas of focus were proposed:
Workforce and Upskilling through Microcredentials: Expanding Open edX offerings to meet workforce needs for non-degree, skill-based learning.
Global Upskilling Initiatives: Leveraging global projects like Skill India Digital Hub to increase Open edX's footprint.
Questions Raised by Attendees and Responses Provided:
@Eden Huthmacher:
Question: Is there a correlation chart that indicates skills-based hiring trends in relation to the growth of non-degree pathways?
Response (Annabel): Not available in the current deck, but she promised to find the data. She acknowledged that while skills-based hiring is being promoted, it is not yet fully integrated into hiring practices in the US. Government and philanthropic efforts are pushing towards it, but it remains inconsistent.
Bohuslava Zhyvko:
Question: Should we engage more US and Canadian universities to get Open edX on Phil Hill’s competitive diagram?
Response (Annabel): Competing with Canvas in traditional higher ed would require substantial marketing investments. The focus should be on segments where Open edX is strong: online, adult-serving, and non-degree programs.
@Vineet Manuja:
Question: Are we over-indexing on North American markets while ignoring growth in Asia-Pacific, Africa, and Latin America?
Response (Annabel): Acknowledged the bias but clarified that it was intentional to address immediate growth areas. Future strategies include expanding in emerging markets with Skill India and FutureX as blueprints.
Closing Notes:
@annabel.cellini welcomed further questions and encouraged attendees to post questions in Slack ahead of the next meeting.
Next session will go deeper into market-specific insights as requested by attendees.
