Quizzes

The following question types are available in New Quizzes:

  • Categorization

  • Essay

  • File Upload

  • Fill in the Blank

  • Formula

  • Hot Spot

  • Matching

  • Multiple Answer

  • Multiple Choice

  • Numeric

  • Ordering

  • True or False

These can all be contained within the quiz itself, or linked to a question bank. A question consists of a question stem, and available answers that largely reflect the appearance of the learner inputs for that problem, for example, this is the interface for a multiple choice problem, with radio buttons on the left to select the correct answer:

Whereas for a category question, the answers are entered directly into the category:

This same model of essentially WYSIWYG question creation even extends to the Hot Spot question, which requires learners to select a zone on the image:

With each question, feedback fields are included with full WYSIWYG editors available to provide a high-quality editing experience for each question type.

Additionally to the tools available for creating the problems themselves, each question has the following options:

  • Show on screen calculator

    • If a problem with this setting is present on the page, the calculator tool is displayed on that page. While it’s strange that this is a per-question option, it’s likely due to the feature intending to be used with question banks, so it is not always possible to guarantee that a question that requires a calculator will be present.

  • Grading options

    • In questions where a learner can get an answer partially correct (such as multiple answer/checkboxes or the matching and categorisation activities), staff have the option of allowing learners to get partial credit for getting some of the available correct answers. “Exact Match” grading only awards any points if all correct answers are chosen.

  • Shuffle choices

    • Allows options within a single question to be shuffled in order where relevant, such as in multiple choice questions.

  • Vary points by answer

    • Allows different answers options to award different point values for things like providing partial credit.

  • Align to outcomes

    • In Canvas, institutions and courses can define learning outcomes at each of those levels, which questions in quizzes (and the quiz as a whole) can then be directly tied to in order to track learner progress against those objectives.

  • Item Banking

    • Questions can be added to new and existing item banks from within the question editing interface, to make them easy to quickly store in libraries.

LTI

Canvas refers to LTI tools as External Apps, and can be configured at the account (site) or course-level. Course staff cannot configure these themselves in Canvas courses, and they must be configured by administrators. LTI tools are available through the Canvas Apps Center which provides course staff with pre-approved LTI tools.

Configuration of LTI tools is not made user-friendly, as the interface for their configuration is aimed at technical staff
