Meeting Notes:

Attendees: @Angie Ruíz , @Nicole Kessler , @Vineet Manuja , @Jaimin Pavashiya

During today's Partnership development focus group meeting, we observed that attendance was lower than expected (understandably, due to the start of the year). However, we remain confident that this group holds immense potential to drive growth and business development for the Open edX ecosystem. To fully realize this potential, it's essential that we enhance engagement and foster greater collaboration.

By adopting a more strategic approach and collecting key insights, we can strengthen relationships with influential industry players and take impactful actions that will drive meaningful growth. We've noted some key points in this board, and further discussions can take place via Slack, but @Angie Ruíz wanted to reach out through following email to ensure we're all aligned and proactive as we begin the year.

Key Points we Addressed:

  1. Upcoming Conference Presentation: We're excited to announce that again this year we will be speaking at an upcoming conference to showcase the results and strategies of this group. This will be a fantastic opportunity for us all to collaborate and demonstrate the value we're collectively creating.

  2. Our OKRs:

    • Increase market share in targeted regions.

    • Identify and enter new industry sectors.

    • Form and help OE foster partnerships with Global/local organizations to facilitate market entry and positioning.

  3. Current State of Open edX: As highlighted by last year's data in the Biz dev presentation, Open edX is losing traction in key markets, while other LMS platforms are gaining momentum. Our active sites are spread across Europe, North America, South America, MENA region, East Asia, Africa, South Asia, Central America, and the Caribbean, with the largest concentrations in the US, Saudi Arabia, and France.

  4. Market Comparison: Open edX currently has just under 2,000 active sites in 2024, compared to Moodle's 214,553 sites and Canvas' 9,928. This stark difference clearly illustrates the urgent need for action to close this gap.

  5. Competitor Analysis: Other LMS platforms are also outpacing Open edX in terms of course catalog size and global reach. Countries like the US, Vietnam, Ethiopia, the UK, Thailand, Taiwan, and Bangladesh are leading in this space.

  6. Historical Trends: Open edX saw substantial growth during the pandemic, but has experienced a slowdown since. While there has been a recent pick-up in 2023, it's essential we maintain this momentum and continue strengthening our community to support global expansion.

Immediate Action Required:

It's clear that Open edX must prioritize building strategic partnerships with larger, influential players in the LMS ecosystem. This will help elevate our global presence and increase brand awareness. However, as group members, we lack the authority to initiate these high-level discussions or formalize agreements. This is where Axim can play a pivotal role in leading these efforts.

To assist Axim in driving these efforts, we've developed the following materials:

  • Matrix for Partnership Criteria: A tool to identify and prioritize potential partners based on business alignment and platform compatibility.

  • Master Agreement Example: A template designed to streamline negotiations and formalize partnerships quickly.

  • Presentation: A concise presentation outlining the value of partnering with Open edX. This will need refinement to better emphasize the advantages of collaborating with us.

Call to Action:

We want Axim, to take the lead in these discussions with our full support, securing valuable partnerships that will help propel Open edX forward. It's important that we focus not only on smaller players but also look for partnerships with large, global organizations to strengthen our position in the LMS ecosystem.

Today we worked on some materials , please take some time to review the materials provided and offer any feedback on how we can refine them to capture the attention of prospective partners more effectively.

Next Steps:

  1. Review the Matrix, Master Agreement Example, and Presentation.

  2. Provide feedback on any changes or improvements that will increase their effectiveness.

  3. Agree on action steps to help OE and Axim begin initiating discussions with potential partners.

We're excited to hear your thoughts and work together to bring this vision to life. By collaborating closely, we can ensure Open edX's success in an increasingly competitive market.

Best regards,
