Schedule Explained


Open edX Releases work on a:

  • six-month cycle,

  • with action points on the 9th of every second month,

  • with major releases happening in June and December.

Here’s a visualization of the schedule for three hypothetical releases named Xylowood, Yoctowood, and Zebrawood.

April 9th

  • Xylowood:

    • open-release/xylowood.3 tag created.

    • Xylowood.3 minor release announced to community.

  • Yoctowood:

    • open-release/yoctowood.master branches are cut in Open edX repos, from master / main.

    • yoctowood branch is created in Tutor.

    • Yoctowood testing begins.

June 9th

  • Xylowood:

    • Xylowood support ends.

  • Yoctowood:

    • open-release/yoctowood.1 tag created.

    • Tutor merges yoctowood into its master branch, releasing Tutor v25.0.0 (Y is the 25th letter of the alphabet).

    • Yoctowood & Tutor v25 are announced to community.

August 9th

  • Yoctowood:

    • open-release/yoctowood.2 tag created.

    • Yoctowood.2 minor release announced to community.

October 9th
