The SCORM XBlock was deployed on 6/26 and is now available on edx.org. Desire for SCORM compatibility has been validated particularly in conversations with partners during the platform map interviews conducted in the spring, surveys, through interactions with several edX partner managers, and also when discussing potential catalog takeovers.

Details 

SCORM, which stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model,  is a set of technical standards for eLearning software products. SCORM tells programmers how to write their code so that it can “play well” with other eLearning software. It is the de facto industry standard for eLearning interoperability. Specifically, SCORM governs how online learning content and Learning Management Systems (LMSs) communicate with each other. 

The value of this work is that SCORM allows our partners to distribute their content to edx.org with the smallest headache possible. Internally, it allows us to handle content from a variety of sources. This will make it easier to ingest course content into edx.org. This is both a desire of partners as well as one of the highlighted goals for edX Studio in 2023. 

Additionally, many partners use third-party authoring tools like Articulate Storyline to design engaging, attractive, interactive portable content. Our ability to add this functionality means they can easily migrate it to edX without losing any of that functionality and design or having to rebuild it from scratch. SCORM also allows for these deployed objects to pass student interaction and performance data back to the edX to connect with progress tracking.

Uploading SCORM Content

  • Choose the SCORM .zip package you want to upload.

  • If the SCORM content does not have any quizzes, set “Scored” to False.

    • If the “Scored” parameter is True, you must specify the weight of the quizzes’ points.
