Summary

This work is part of the larger Studio Redesign project. This project aims to 

  • Make finding a user’s courses easier (search, filter, sort, favorites)

  • Offer valuable course information at a quick glance. This information includes whether a course is published, what the course start and end dates are, who last edited the course, a timestamp of last edited, and the number of enrolled learners

  • Enable the ability to find other related experiences through Studio Home such as Content Libraries. The UX will also make considerations for future experiences such as an  Admin Dashboard and Taxonomies

  • Make “help” more useful and not located in various locations of the page

  • Improved UI and overall experience

User Stories

  • I need a better way to keep track of course re-runs so that I can see the relationship between the original course and the re-run course

  • I want to search for course keywords so that I have another way of navigating through my long list of courses

  • I need to see the current status of my courses and re-runs (published vs unpublished) so that I can keep track of current state and progress of my courses 

  • I need more options for searching the organization drop-down without needing to enter the exact name of the organization, because I may not know the exact name of the organization

  • I want to see a timestamp of when a course or re-run was last edited and who last edited it so that I can keep track of the current state and progress of my courses

Key Evidence Summary

We knew of several capabilities that partners were interested in based on previous feedback

  • Search by keyword and/or course title

  • Search for courses based on their status of published/unpublished

  • Provide a dropdown for organization name

  • Filter 

  • Sort 

  • Make the relationship between re-run and original course obvious

  • Pagination

We also ran a brief survey that asked respondents to stack rank what they would like to be able to see at a quick glance as well as what they would like to be able to sort/filter. There were eight options that we asked respondents to stack rank, and the scoring gave eight points for a first place vote, seven points for a second place vote, and so on. We also asked for feedback as to whether we had left any options out. While feedback was interesting in regard to future enhancements, there were no options that appear to have been left out. Overall there were 21 respondents.

Course Dashboard

  • Course listing dashboard is the primary Studio Home experience

  • Search courses by keyword, including course title

  • Filter by active/archived and published/unpublished

  • Sort by newest/oldest, course title, and number of enrollees

  • Quick glance info includes published/unpublished, start and end dates, who last edited the course, a timestamp of the last edit, and number of enrolled learners (what was last changed is out of scope for this work and we included it in the survey to test for desirability)

  • Pagination

  • Archived Courses

  • Maintains direct relationship between course re-runs and the original course

  • Create new course

  • Create new library

  • Access existing libraries

  • Content/library dashboard

  • Admin dashboard (future project specifically aimed at at a new set of roles and permissions)

Org Dropdown

  • Includes predictive suggestions

Favorites

  • Creates the ability to favorite courses so that the user has another way to quickly find what course they are looking for (this feature was validated as highly desired by feedback on our survey)

Help

  • Should be in one place and not scattered across the page

  • Link to one course - Studio X (remove edX 101 because it is confusing to new users to be given links to two instructional courses)

  • Link to partner portal

  • Exists in the footer

Current/Next Steps

  • It is worth noting that this work has a decent amount of collaboration. Racoon Gang is currently working on the MFE of Studio Home while the initial mocks are being worked on by 2U (Jon Fay). The engineering will be completed by edunext and paid for by the Spanish Consortium. Axim also has had a strong product presence throughout this process. 

  • Studio Home is being MFE’d by Racoon Gang as part of a blended project with TNL

  • UX has the necessary product requirements and mocks are actively being worked on

  • Once hifi mocks are complete, edunext will begin engineering work
