Moodle - Randomized Content

Moodle has the ability to add random questions into a quiz from a question bank. When a learner retakes a quiz, it ensures that an entirely different set of questions is extracted from the question bank where possible. The quiz weighting for that question overrides the default weight that was set when the question was created and added to the question bank. The same question will never appear twice in a quiz.

When selecting random questions from the bank, the quiz can be configured to pull from all questions within the bank, or filtered more precisely by tag and category, and instructors can preview the pool of questions that match their tag and category.

Question banks can be shared between courses by category, but this has to be set up and configured via categories by a Moodle site administrator. It is possible to let individual users share question bank content, but a role has to be configured and assigned the permission to access wider question bank content. It seems likely that you could also assign this permission to existing staff roles, but this isn’t listed as a solution, and is likely not considered best-practice.

Moodle’s randomization features appear to be limited entirely to questions within quizzes. There is no native feature for providing random videos or HTML content.

Above: Random question category and tag selection. 17 questions are available in the chosen category, and 3 questions with the chosen tag of ‘vegan’ exist.
