Matching Problem Comparator Research

  • Blackboard has a good matching question that supports a surprisingly huge range of media and other items in their questions and answers, including LTI items, YouTube Videos, and images. This seems a little excessive, but I respect that the options exist:

  • Canvas automatically removes options from the list when they are used to make the selection easier, but users have pointed out the inherent issue with this approach - namely that it makes it difficult to ‘undo’ answers. We should shoot for a halfway point for this use-case to avoid accidentally “tricking” learners into incorrect responses, but make it simple to reset existing answers.

  • Moodle has a matching question type, but it is surprisingly inflexible (given Moodle normally has too many settings available), and does not support randomisation in the lesson module, among other limitations. Moodle gives authors the option of using drag and drop or dropdowns to answer the question, which again speaks to Moodle’s lack of focus on opinionated tools. Moodle generally tends to do everything you could think of in every way possible, but none of them particularly well.
