Beta Testing Program

@Ali Hugo

  • @Xavier Antoviaque's idea to set a beta testing program:

    • users sign up as beta testers

    • in return, they get privileged channels for providing feedback

  • The program could be advertised on the blog, on a landing page specifically for the program, or within a notification in Studio (for instructors), or in the LMS (for learners)

  • Interested users will complete the registration form (which is linked to a mailing list) and be informed of any upcoming features to test

  • Forum post recruiting test users for Quince, and listing previous test users for Palm

Meeting notes

  • Files and Uploads has been rolled out to edx.org. @Patrick Kenny will demo it in an upcoming meeting, and @Brad Brown will circulate release notes

  • The Course Mode MFE project is on pause, but will be revisited after the new Studio MFE work has been completed. It should be easier to add at that stage

  • EduNext will be leading the design work and prototype for the LTI MVP, and OpenCraft will be responsible for the backend implementation

  • Projects are only added to the list of UX/UI projects once they have reached the discussion phase of the Product Review process

  • Finding test users

    • We are not going to leverage any third-party tools for managing test users just yet, but might look into this in the future once we have built a bigger pool of test users

    • Asma Ahmed is looking for test users to participate in usability tests on Tutor’s current theme

      • EduNext will ask the Spanish universities they work with if there are any students that could participate in these usability tests

      • It might be beneficial to contact providers listed on the https://openedx.org/marketplace-all/ to ask if they could suggest any test users

    • Using Slack channels to recruit test users

      • We will likely start with two channels - one for technical users, and one non-technical users (@Jenna Makowski will create these channels)

      • These channels will be “advertised” across the existing community channels, and those interested in becoming test users will join

      • Users will complete a short Google Form to sign up as test users. @María de los Ángeles Aguilar and Asma Ahmed will work together to write the announcements, and create the Google Form

      • This announcement can also be sent via other channels across the community (this is important as the current Open edX Slack community doesn’t include many end users. This may change in the future…)

      • Users that match the required persona will be selected for each usability test

      • We may revisit developing a more formal beta-testing program in the future

    • We will identify the types of test users we require, as well as the types of usability tests we may conduct

 Action items

  • @Brad Brown to circulate release notes for Files and Uploads

  • @Jenna Makowski to touch base with @Brad Brown to determine how to integrate the Course Mode MFE project with the Studio MFE project (once it is complete)

  • @Ali Hugo to investigate the options for creating a centralized space in Figma for all community files

  • @Santiago Suarez to ask the Spanish universities if they have a list of students for Asma’s usability tests

  • @María de los Ángeles Aguilar and Asma Ahmed to create a Google Form and announcement to recruit test users. A draft should be shared with the UX/UI Working Group before these announcements are made

  • @Ali Hugo to create a spreadsheet of the types of test users we require, as well as the types of usability tests we may conduct
