Meeting Notes:
Date: 06.02.2025
Attendees: @Eden Huthmacher , @Angie Ruíz , @Vineet Manuja , @Juan Camilo Montoya , @Jaimin Pavashiya
Key Discussions & Takeaways:
Open edX Growth Trends & Unique Instances On basis of @Juan Camilo Montoya 's (Open edX platform Global footprint report December 2024 - Posted in slack channel - WG BIZ DEV
Observation: A decline in unique Open edX instances from over 1,900 to 1,300 was noted.
Reason: The previous count did not account for IP addresses correctly, leading to duplicate counts. The new methodology consolidates instances under the same IP.
Action: @Juan Camilo Montoya will retroactively apply the new methodology to past data to assess actual growth trends between 2023-2024.
Significance: Essential for showcasing Open edX’s expansion at upcoming workshops.
Partnership Matrix and Tracking
@Eden Huthmacher introduced a partnership tracking Matrix proposed by @Angie Ruíz, which is being populated with current partnership opportunities.
2.1 Credly
Current discussions include integration with Credly, focusing on enabling learners to access badges directly within Open edX instances.
Credly indicated they lack capacity to prioritize this integration, prompting a discussion on potential partners who could assist.
Potential Solutions:
Engage Open edX partners to explore funding or development efforts.
Reassess the necessity of prioritizing this integration.
Next Steps:
@Eden Huthmacher to discuss funding options internally.
@Vineet Manuja suggested to add a prioritization scoring column to the partnership matrix.
Follow up with Credly for prioritizing collaboration.
2.2 Turnitin
The group discussed the integration with Turnitin, highlighting the preference for LTI 1.3 integration over API routes - Turnitin wants Open edX to integrate via LTI 1.3 rather than APIs.
Turnitin is interested in a formal integration partnership with Axim.
Key Concerns:
Who owns the grading data? If Turnitin does all grading externally, Open edX loses control. - @Juan Camilo Montoya
Licensing costs could be high for Open edX institutions.
Potential Approach:
Ensure Open edX has the ability to store grading data internally.
Require bidirectional data exchange in any partnership agreements.
Next Steps:
Abstract Technology to continue testing and report findings.
Eden to discuss Open edX’s strategic data ownership needs with Turnitin.
2.3 BigBlueButton
Proposal: BigBlueButton, an open-source video conferencing tool, wants deeper integration with Open edX similar to its partnership with Moodle.
Next Steps:
Abstract Technology to discuss maintenance and responsibilities with BigBlueButton.
2.4 AWS Academy
Status: AWS Academy is interested in Open edX but hesitant due to scale concerns.
Challenges:
Need for a compelling large-scale use case to incentivize AWS Academy adoption.
Next Steps:
Continue searching for a significant pilot project.
@Juan Camilo Montoya to explore potential government-backed projects.
@Eden Huthmacher to follow up with AWS regarding alternative collaboration models.
Strategic Initiatives for Open edX Ecosystem Growth
@Juan Camilo Montoya proposed four major initiatives to strengthen Open edX’s adoption and engagement: highlighted Partnership Development
Next Steps:
@Juan Camilo Montoya and @Eden Huthmacher to present these initiatives at the next bizdev meeting.
Other members to provide a feedback or add additional idea there.
Action Points & Responsibilities:
@Juan Camilo Montoya: Apply past methodology to the new Open edX report to assess actual growth trends.
@Eden Huthmacher: Discuss funding options for Credly integration internally.
@Eden Huthmacher : Follow up with AWS regarding potential large-scale pilots.
@Jaimin Pavashiya : Follow up with BigBlueButton on long-term maintenance commitments.
